Our department has a tradition. Every other week during the fall and spring semester, three to four grads cook for all the other grads. Althought it takes me some time to trace it back, but Grunch (from Graduate Lunch) has become part of our graduate life. During the grunch, we can not only taste professional food (sometimes, it is really different than that sold in downtown restaurants) from all around the world, it is also an good time for meet the other grads that you do not usually see in ordinary life. Besides eating, grads can have discussions on future plans of graduate life, decide committee members, making accouncement or more interesting, give a talk. If you have been to some places of interest or just came back from a conference, foreign countries, you are very welcome to set up a projector and give an unformal presentation. It takes some time to cook, but it is fun to do that, especially when your food becomes the favorite!
