Astro 11 Lab Manual Updates
(Last updated: Apr. 18, 2002)
The Lab Manual has been converted to LaTex format!!!!
I do not advise printing this out, it's 106 pages total (4 pages
of introduction, and 102 pages of labs) - that's a lot of trees!
Please read through the "converted" lab manual and look
for typos, formatting errors, or other problems.
All figures are included.
The biggest differences between the current version and the new
"converted" version, are:
- Lab 4 (latitude lab): all references to miles were changed to
kilometers
- Lab 2 and 5 (Skyglobe and Orbit Maker labs): the
old versions were removed in favor of the
newer, computer based, versions
- Lab 13 (Cepheid Distances): I've taken the liberty of removing
the old version of lab 13 and replacing it with the "answer
sheet" for the entirely web based version (I don't think
anyone was using the old version anymore, plus all the links and
web sites needed for the old one have changed)
- The moon lab was added as Lab 16 - this can easily be removed
if there are objections
- Lab 11 (Milky Way Structure) and Lab 10 (Pleiades): I've
replaced the old Lab 11 with the new version, and have moved the
globular cluster HR Diagram from lab 11 to lab 10 (I am removing
the photograph of the Pleiades, since it no longer serves any
purpose for the lab)
If you would like to see a copy of the current version (Fall
2001/Spring 2002), there is one in a binder in the Planetarium (on the
counter next to all the slide/overhead binders).
Please e-mail me (stark@astro.psu.edu)
with any notes, comments, and/or questions you may have. The final
version for Fall 2002/Spring 2003 is due to the publishers by May 1st,
so any corrections/changes/additions need to be brought to my
attention well before that date.
Thanks!
