This is a picture taken by Bill Keel showing the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds together. The clouds are two satellite galaxies of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. They contain respectively a few billion and maybe a little less than billion stars, and are only visible from the southern hemisphere.
The LMC is the brighter of the two galaxies seen in the top picture, and it and some of the various stellar clusters in it (visible as bright star like points in these pictures) are the subject of study of this project.
