AAS: American Astronomical Society.
ACIS : AXAF CCD Imaging Spectrometer.
AD590: a temperature sensor manufactured by Analog Devices.
ADC: Analog to Digital Convertor.
ASCA : Japanese/US X-ray satellite.
AXAF : Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility (Hubble-class X-ray observatory).
CCD: Charge-Coupled Device.
CCD1, CCD2: IDs of the two flight CCD detectors.
CCI: Camera Control/Interface board. This is the electronics board that contains the CCD clock generator, DMA controller, and ADC controller/FIFO. It is also sometimes referred to as the Clock Generator Board.
CCID7: a CCD model produced by Lincoln Laboratory.
CDB: Clock Driver Board.
CDR: Critical Design Review.
CG: Center of Gravity (also called Center of Mass).
COBE: Cosmic Background Explorer: satellite that measured the microwave background.
CONAE: Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales (Argentina's space agency).
CTE: Charge Transfer Efficiency, a measure of the ability of a CCD to transfer a charge package from pixel to pixel without losing charge.
CUBIC : Cosmic Unresolved Background Instrument Using CCDs.
CXB: Cosmic X-ray Background.
DAC: Digital to Analog Convertor.
DAT: Digital Audio Tape.
DMA: Direct Memory Access.
DPDT: Double Pole, Double Throw.
DPW: Data Processing Workstation.
ECC: Error Correction Code.
EEPROM: Electrically Eraseable Programmable Read-Only Memory.
EEV: the manufacturer of the CUBIC CCDs.
EGSE: Electronic Ground Support Equipment.
EOT: End of Transmission.
ESA: European Space Agency.
EUV: Extreme UltraViolet.
FET: Field Effect Transistor.
FIFO: First In First Out, a digital buffer chip.
FOV: Field of View.
FTP: File Transfer Program, a program for transferring files on the Internet.
FWHM: Full Width at Half Max.
GSC: Ground Support Computer.
GSE: Ground Support Equipment.
GSFC: Goddard Space Flight Center.
HEAO: High Energy Astrophysical Observatory.
HETE: High Energy Transient Explorer.
HK: HouseKeeping.
HQ: HeadQuarters.
HXRS: Hard X-ray Spectrometer.
IAFE: Instituto de Astronomia y Fisica del Espacio (Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics) at the University of Buenos Aires.
ICD: Interface Control Document.
ICP: Image & Control Processor, the electronics board that contains the CUBIC CPU and memory. This board runs the CUBIC instrument, collects and processes the data, and formats and stores it for later transmission to the ground.
INVAP: the Argentine company that is the spacecraft contractor for SAC-B .
ISENA: Imaging Particle Spectrometer for Energetic Neutral Atoms.
IUE: International Ultraviolet Explorer.
JPL: Jet Propulsion Laboratory.
LLD: Low Level Discriminator.
LN2: Liquid Nitrogen.
LSB: Least Significant Bit.
MDR: Memory Defect Record.
MOCC: Mission Operations and Control Center.
MOI: Moment of Inertia.
MSB: Most Significant Bit.
MUX: Multiplexer.
NEC: Nippon Electronics Company (?).
NEP: North Ecliptic Pole.
NPS: North Polar Spur.
PCB: Printed Circuit Board.
PDR: Preliminary Design Review.
PSPC: Position Sensitive Proportional Counter.
PSU: Penn State University.
QE: Quantum Efficiency.
QSO: Quasi-Stellar Object.
RAM: Random Access Memory.
RF: Radio Frequency.
ROSAT : Röntgen Satellite - German/US X-ray telescope.
RTD: Resistance Temperature Detector.
SAA: South Atlantic Anomaly. This is a region off the east coast of South America where the Earth's magnetic field is anomalous and the particle belts reach very low altitudes, resulting in high fluxes of protons and electrons.
SAC-B : Satélite de Aplicaciones Científicas-B.
SEU: Single Event Upset.
SIS: Solid-state Imaging Spectrometer (CCD camera on ASCA satellite).
SS: Stainless Steel.
SXRB: Soft X-Ray Background.
TCP/IP: computer intercommunication protocol.
TEC: Thermo-Electric Cooler, also known as a Peltier cooler.
ULD: Upper Level Discriminator.
UV: UltraViolet.
UW: University of Wisconsin.
VAC: Volts AC (Alternating Current).
XMM: X-ray Multi-mirror Mission - large ESA X-ray observatory.
