HETDEX Postdoctoral Postition

POSTDOCTORAL POSITION, PENN STATE: Applications are invited for a position which could begin as early as August 2012. The successful applicant will work with Drs. Robin Ciardullo, Caryl Gronwall, and Donald Schneider on the analysis/interpretation of data from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX), a major spectroscopic survey program scheduled to begin data acquisition in fall of 2012. The HETDEX survey instrument is VIRUS, an optical spectrograph consisting of 75 integral-field units that will cover 16.5 arcmin2 of sky and produce 33,600 spectra between 350 and 550 nm at 0.64 nm resolution with each pointing. The final HETDEX dataset will contain spectra for approximately 500,000 Lyα emitting galaxies, 1 million [O II] emitting galaxies, 250,000 million stars, and 0.4 million additional galaxies. A parallel deep imaging survey is also part of the project. For more information on the experiment, see http://www.astro.psu.edu/astro-research/facilities/hobby-eberly-dark-energy-experiment or http://hetdex.org/hetdex/scientific_papers.php.

The successful applicant will be expected to lead HETDEX-related scientific investigations, produce object catalogs from the imaging survey, develop software tools for the analysis of VIRUS data, and assist other departmental researchers in mining the HETDEX database. A PhD is required, and significant experience working with optical data (in particular broad band imaging and spectroscopic surveys) and large databases would be an advantage.

Information about the Department can be found at http://www.astro.psu.edu. Applications including CV, publications list, statement of research interests, and three professional reference letters should be sent to caryl@astro.psu.edu by Jan 1, 2012. Questions about the position should be directed to Dr. Caryl Gronwall at caryl@astro.psu.edu
